get to know us a bit more
Welcome to Cornwall Canine Centre
We began our journey into feeding raw when we purchased our first dog Keira. She was a gorgeous brindle Great Dane and a typical example of what most people perceive a Great Dane to be, a ‘Gentle giant’.
So, I had my new puppy, and I knew that she was going to grow up to be a big girl! Like most new pet owners, I went to the local pet store and asked for their advice on foods which were suitable for her type. After being pointed into the right direction (or so I thought!), off I went to delight my new puppy with her bowl of kibble. She revelled into her evening meal and looked rather content as she snuggled up for her evening cuddles. Oh yes! Just like the others, I thought I was doing the best for my girl!
Keira developed well and I can honestly say that I had no real issues with her growth (apart from that fact that she was HUGE!!!) One day, as I was serving her breakfast, I thought to myself ‘Could I eat that every day and enjoy it?”. I also became quite curious as to exactly what was in the kibble? I began to research the ingredients and their nutritional benefits, but the truth was, the information was limited.
I called up the manufacturers to ask them where they sourced their ingredients, but would you believe it, they could not release the information. How naive I was to think that a large dog food corporation was going to tell somebody like me that! So, my curiosity really got the better of me and I delved into the dog food manufacturing rabbit hole even further. The more I read, the more the alarm bells started to ring and the guilt of knowing what I had been giving my dog began to escalate.
I knew I needed to change her diet, but I didn’t know how or where to start. I began to contact as many Great Dane owners, breeders, and exhibitors as I could (many of which are now dear friends). The advice was endless and still is to this day. As they say, ‘You never stop learning!’.
I was introduced to the BARF diet, ‘Biologically Appropriate Raw Food’, by a good friend of mine who had also been a fellow Dane owner/exhibitor for over a quarter of a decade. He had spent years studying the benefits of feeding raw and implementing it into his own dogs’ diet. After listening to his reasons, it all made sense! From that moment on, I began my journey into feeding raw and have never looked back!
In the beginning I can truthfully say, I was nervous! I asked all of the usual question such as: ‘Won’t they get food poisoning?’ ‘Will they choke on the bones?’, ‘Are you sure it contains all the nutrients they need?’ In fact, I’ll never forget my friend saying to me when I questioned him on feeding raw bones, ‘Do you think they cook their chicken wings on the BBQ in the wild?’. As soon as he said that I felt slightly embarrassed for asking the question, but we threw our heads back in laughter and continued our conversation on his experiences of raw feeding.
At the time, we were living on my in-law’s beef cattle farm, which is situated in the heart of Cornwall. With 120 acres of outstanding beauty, it was inevitable that one dog was not going to be enough, so we decided to rehome another Great Dane named Kane, an outstanding fawn boy. Shortly after came our third, a beautiful fawn puppy called Izzy, who then became our foundation bitch to the ‘Keirkane’ Great Dane line.
With the benefits of my husband working for the family butcher’s business (L George butchers), our dogs were all on their way to eating raw and I quickly began to see the benefits! They were fit, had plenty of stamina, glossy coats, and excellent muscle tone. I knew where their food was coming from and how it had been reared. I knew there were no additives or flavourings, and their diet was as raw as raw gets, hence my new moto “Keeping it Raw, Keeping it Real”. Real food for real dogs! My objectives for feeding raw was to mimic their natural diet and to know exactly what they were consuming. Let’s face it, does anybody from the general public really know what goes into dried kibble or how its processed?
I didn’t want to rear my dogs to become couch potatoes, I wanted them to become what nature had intended them to be, fit, strong, and healthy. After all, it’s a breed bred for hunting wild boar and they have to be fit for function. I knew by feeding them raw, I was in control of their dietary needs and by being so, could change it accordingly to their specific needs
Seeing the benefits of feeding raw to my own dogs, encouraged me to promote the benefits to others, so I began to spread the word to close friends and family and supplying them with foods for their dogs too. This soon led to others approaching Darren and I for food and advice, so I then looked at stocking a larger range of meats and purchasing additional freezer space and so “Georges Raw Dog Foods” began.
My husband Darren, who also plays a role in the business, is also the owner of our wholesale meat department, ‘George Butcher Ltd’, which caters meats for numerous businesses throughout the Southwest. Not only do we cater for the wholesale trade, but our team of highly skilled butchers carry out private preparations for local farmers too. Always a bonus when you have hungry mouths to feed!!!
Darren is the fourth generation to follow in his family’s business which was first established by his Great Grandfather, Mr Lewis George in 1912. After leaving school, he worked alongside his father and Grandfather to learn the trade and business management. After working over 20 years at the family butchers in St Newlyn East, Darren decided to expand the wholesale department by renovating an existing building on the family farm in Marazanvose. With the expansion of the premises, facilities and equipment, the business is going from strength to strength, and we are pleased that our children have now come on board to assist with the daily operations and running’s of both the meat wholesale and raw feeds business.
I predominantly dedicate most of my time with the pet food business/shop as well as looking after my family and dogs. However, I will still pop into the butchers to give Darren a hand when he needs an extra pair of experienced hands, so as you can imagine, there is not much time left at the end of the week! We both thrive in our fields of expertise and what we do and are always available to give any help, advice and support.
Where we are today
We have been owned by Great Danes for over 19 years now and I have been actively involved in the breeding, exhibiting, and judging of this noble breed and others for over 15 of them. We have also had Pugs, French Bulldogs and Rottweilers, all of which have been exhibited, but my main passion and success has always and will continue to be in my Danes. I am proud to claim that our breeding programme and dedication to the show world has produced not only numerous dogs to various titles in the UK, but Champions both here and abroad.
After a few years of supplying raw dog feeds via our previous website ‘Georges Raw Dog Food’, we knew it was time to expand to meet the increasing demands of the public and their beloved pets. To meet these demands, we have now opened our own raw feeds and canine well-being centre in the heart of Newquay, Cornwall, called ‘CORNWALL CANINE CENTRE’.
When we were planning our expansion, we knew that we wanted to provide numerous services, not just freezers full of raw, because we know that the well-being of a dog is not just about diet. We also wanted to support people on their journeys with their pets, such as weight management, training tips, grooming as well as feeding advice. Therefore, our main intentions of our premises was to provide people and their dogs with a little bit of everything that is required for the benefit of their furry friends, such as: wholesome, natural feeds, health supplements and a selection of accessories such as toys, bedding, leads and collars etc. Because we know how important skin and coat hygiene and maintenance is for a dog’s well-being, we knew that we wanted to provide our customers with onsite grooming facilities and services.
2023 – 2025
When I first created Cornwall Canine Centre, my vision was to build a place that supports every aspect of a dog’s wellbeing — not only diet, but coat hygiene, enrichment, training, weight management and overall care. In April 2023, we officially opened the Cornwall Canine Centre Pet Shop, and in August 2023 we expanded further by opening our Grooming Room and the Self-Service DIY Dog Washroom, all while our delivery service continued helping customers across Cornwall.
I always knew it would take time to gradually build recognition and establish a reputation across Newquay and the wider county. Most businesses naturally take a couple of years before steady, loyal clientele begins to appear — and I understood that from the beginning. In those early days, one of the phrases I heard more than anything else was, “We never knew you were here!” But with patience, consistency and genuine care for our customers, the recognition started to grow. Over time, our customer base became strong and loyal, something I’m extremely proud of considering how tucked away our location is. It still amazes me to see how far the centre has come.
As more people discovered us, we began welcoming customers from all across Cornwall, and during the holiday seasons we even had families from all over the UK book their dogs in for grooming while staying nearby. Many also ordered deliveries straight to their holiday homes so they could keep their dogs on their raw diet during their stay. It’s been wonderful seeing both returning customers and new visitors discovering our one-stop centre every single day.
Inside the pet shop, we provide professional weight scales so owners can keep track of their dogs’ weight properly. Weight management is such an important part of a dog’s long-term health, and I take great pride in helping customers reach the right balance for their dogs through raw feeding and proper nutrition. Many people message me privately for personalised guidance, feeding advice or support — and I’m always happy to help.
As the business grew, the shop grew with it. We now have more freezers, more stock and a much wider range of products than when we first started, allowing us to meet the needs of many more dogs, breeds and dietary requirements.
In February 2025, my son Theo took over the delivery side of the business across Cornwall. He has helped expand and manage our deliveries, offered guidance to customers transitioning to raw feeding, and shared his knowledge with families all over Cornwall. Theo has also supported us with hosting events and contributing to our social media, helping strengthen the educational side of our brand. During this time, my daughter Ashleigh helped in the pet shop as well, and as the business grew we also had other fantastic staff members who supported us throughout 2025.
Over time, we’ve held a variety of events to support and educate dog owners throughout Cornwall, including charity events, dog shows, holistic canine talks, a titter testing clinic, attending markets to spread awareness, handing out flyers, and other community days. All of these experiences have helped us build deeper connections with local dog owners and strengthen the supportive community we’re so proud to be part of.
We also plan to build a stronger network with dog owners and other dog-focused businesses across Cornwall, including behaviourists, trainers, vets, kennels, dog-friendly cafés, and doggy daycares. By connecting with more experts and pet professionals, we hope to create a supportive, county-wide community centred around canine wellbeing. Our long-term goal is to educate the whole of Cornwall—and eventually the entire UK—on the benefits of raw feeding, something our Great Danes have thrived on for generations. As we continue to grow, we’re excited to share our knowledge, experience, and passion for raw nutrition with dog lovers everywhere.
Behind all of this is a small but dedicated team. After more than 20 years of showing dogs — including multiple champions — I chose to take a step back from the show world to focus entirely on building this centre and supporting dog owners across Cornwall. The centre continues to be run with genuine care, warmth and passion for dogs and the families who trust us.
As we move forward, I’m excited for what lies ahead. We’re planning more events, talks, workshops and improvements to the services we offer. We’ll continue sharing updates on our website and social media, and I’m grateful for every loyal customer — as well as the many new faces who discover us each week.
Our long-term dream is to create a full Cornwall Canine Centre headquarters on our family farm, bringing every part of the business together under one roof and branches spread across Cornwall. We hope to develop our own raw food supply too, producing high-quality meals made from trusted local sources.
HAPPY RAW FEEDING!
